How much does a refrigerant leak repair cost?
A leak repair is three jobs: find the leak, fix it, restore the charge. Why the middle stage decides the price. Why a top-off-only quote is a warning sign.
It varies widely, because leak repair is three jobs in one: finding the leak, fixing it. Restoring the correct charge. A loose connection is a small, contained job; a corroded indoor coil can mean replacing the coil. The estimate you approve should itemize all three stages. And fix the leak, not just refill it.
What to have ready
- Any past refrigerant service records. A pattern of refills is key evidence. It tells the technician the system has been leaking. For how long, before anyone arrives.
- Notes on what you have observed: weak cooling, ice on the lines or the indoor coil, hissing sounds. Observations help; the leak itself is found with instruments, not eyes.
How the cost is figured
Refrigerant itself is only part of this bill. The three stages explain the whole range.
Stage one is detection.Finding where refrigerant escapes takes time and specialized instruments. Electronic detectors, pressure methods, coil inspection. Because the leak is usually invisible and the system has many places it could be (Q26). Detection is skilled labor before any repair exists. Skipping it produces the worst outcome in this category: a recharge into a system whose hole nobody located.
Stage two is the repair, and this is where the range opens up.A loose or damaged connection may be a contained repair. A corroded evaporator coil. The indoor coil, where refrigerant absorbs heat from indoor air. Is a common leak site on aging systems. It may need to be replaced. That is a major job. It belongs in the repair-or-replace conversation, not inside a routine estimate (Q41). The same diagnosis, "refrigerant leak," honestly prices at opposite ends of the HVAC cost range depending on which stage-two answer your system gives.
Stage three is restoration. The technician removes air and moisture from the system, then recharges it to the maker's specification. The refrigerant is priced by type and amount. Refrigerant types differ in cost and availability. Older and newer refrigerants are not priced alike. Very old refrigerant is scarce (Q80).
| Stage | What it involves | Cost behavior |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Detection | Instruments, inspection, time | Skilled labor; unavoidable |
| 2. Repair | Connection fix → coil replacement | The widest range in HVAC — the site decides |
| 3. Recharge | Evacuation + charge to specification | Priced by refrigerant type and amount |
When to call a professional
A suspected leak always needs a technician. Only certified technicians may handle refrigerant. EPA SEction 608 is the federal certification for this work. And a leak will not repair itself: the system will keep losing charge and cooling worse. Apply the standing test from Q27: a quote that offers only to "top it off" is offering to sell you the same refrigerant again next season. The fix is the product. The refrigerant is just the refill the fix makes permanent.
What happens next
Read any estimate against the three stages. It should name the leak's location, state how it will be permanently corrected. Show detection, repair, and recharge as identifiable parts of the whole. If stage two turns out to be a coil, ask for the repair-or-replace comparison before you decide (Q41).
